TORC

Posted by on in Weather
Hey hey everyone,   As many, if not most of you know, I am a storm chaser. I chase extreme weather anytime, anywhere, and any chance I get. I have a passion to witness and document the most incredible, awe-inspiring forces on the planet. I have recently teamed up with several people who have a desire to chase as well. Two of my chase team members are actually going to school currently for a degree in meteorology (Kristian Kampendahl, Grant McKercher).  A...

November 15th, 2005 Tornado Outbreak

Posted by on in Weather

5 years ago, on this date, an EF3 tornado tore through my county, causing major damage.

The tornado destroyed at least 64 homes and damaged at least 70 more along the US 150 corridor in Washington, Cannelburg and Loogootee. Up to 200 employees were trapped at K&K Industries in Montgomery, but they were all accounted for.

The path of the tornado was 12 miles ling, and it was 3/4 mile wide in some spots. Surprisingly, no one was critically injured or killed from this tornado.

Storm Chase 2011 Prep.

Posted by on in Weather
Here is what I'd like to have done/acquire by the end of winter:   1. Replace the front windshield and tires on the van 2. Some type of hail protection for the windshield 3. Get mobile broadband service, booster antenna, and maybe even a router for that. 4. Bolt my laptop stand to the floor between the driver and passenger seat 5. buy another cot for whomever I take storm chasing with me 6. GRLEVEL2 program 7. Microsoft Streets and Trips 2011 with GPS attachment 8. Possibly buy a pass for t...

Possible Storms and Snow Late This Week

Posted by on in Weather
As the weekend draws to a close, we look ahead to what this week has in store. The Northeast will have a nor'easter to deal with as a low forms off the east coast and moves along the coast. This low will tap some of the moisture from former Hurricane Tomas, and will dump some torrential rains in parts of the Northeast, including Maine, where 2-5 inches can be expected.   However, this will not be an all rain event, as cool air on the backside of this system will help some of the rain to tra...

Possible Winter Weather in the Next Two Weeks

Posted by on in Weather
Hey everyone,   There looks to be a fairly decent cool down coming for Indiana on Thursday and Friday, with a slim possibility of snow fluries on Thursday night and Friday morning. Although there is no chance of accumulation, it is a fairly early chance of snow.   The better chance of snow comes in about 2 weeks, as models are hinting at a winter weather scenario. Currently for Southern Indiana, there looks like there may be a freezing rain and sleet event, and probably won't amount to...

Next Season's Storm Chasing

Posted by on in Weather
Next spring I plan on being able to do several trips to hopefully intercept severe weather, but this will only be possible if I am able to acquire the funds to do so. I am looking to work for the majority of the fall and winter, and hopefully I will be able to save enough money to purchase the necessary equipment to have an efficient and safe chase season.   I have recently purchased a late 90's 15 passenger ford van for my chasing. There are now only the two ...

One Cool Monday

Posted by on in Weather
As the work week begins, so does an overall cool down for my area. We are not supposed to get above 90 until Thursday, and the humidity is at a minimal right now. Blue skies, lower temps, and lack of humidity make for an awesome August day.   I have a couple of predictions I want to make as well. With this brief cool down, I began to think about how this Fall will be, and how the transition from Summer to Winter will go. Autumn is just around the ...

  • Tornadoes Slam 5-State Area, Killing Two; Outbreak Continues Today
The Midwest U.S. is under the gun again today, as a potent storm system that spawned a preliminary count of 24 tornadoes in five states on Sunday reloads and prepares to dish out another afternoon and evening of atmospheric mayhem. Sunday's tornadoes swept through Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois, with Oklahoma bearing the brunt of the assault. The outbreak's only deadly tornado hit Shawnee, Oklahoma, a town of 30,000...
