Hey hey everyone,   As many, if not most of you know, I am a storm chaser. I chase extreme weather anytime, anywhere, and any chance I get. I have a passion to witness and document the most incredible, awe-inspiring forces on the planet. I have recently teamed up with several people who have a desire to chase as well. Two of my chase team members are actually going to school currently for a degree in meteorology (Kristian Kampendahl, Grant McKercher).  A...

Rich has asked me to write up a short summary of the storms after the 1804 hurricane before 1813 that affected Georgia. Sept 11-12, 1810 A strong tropical storm/minimal hurricane made landfall in the lower South Carolina coast during the night. Landfall was south of Charleston, and north of Savannah, but the severity of the winds was greater in Savannah. Since Savannah was on the left side of the storm, landfall was undoubtedly closer to Savannah than Charleston. The British schooners Uni...

Major hurricanes have avoided Georgia for a long time. None have made landfall since October 2, 1898, beyond all living memory. A belief has grown among many of the natives that major hurricanes will always be steered away from the coast here--either by God, the course of the Gulf Stream, or the indentation of the coastline here. A review of recent near misses has lent credence to this belief. In 1989, hurricane Hugo was forecast by several models, and briefly on the official track to make landf...

Hey I'm Rich and interested in tropical systems and general weather in my area. 2011 had a bruatally hot summer, setting a record for the most 90+ degree days.  We have had 73 such days so far, and our old record was 70 in 1998.   Records on St. Simons Island go back to 1948.   Weather the past few years has been weird and dry.  Every year since 2006 has had below normal rainfall, and so were 2001-2004.  In fact the decade of the 2000s was so dry that when our new normals came out for 1981-2010 ...
